HOW SOLAR PANELS ACTUALLY WORK

Curious about how solar panels make electricity? Or the two different ways they can save you money? Here is our basic breakdown of the process that should shed some light on the process.

STEP 1) THE SOLAR PANELS PRODUCE AN ELECTRICAL CURRENT

Sunlight hits your panels which activates the cell. This causes electrons to separate from atoms. The electrons set them in motion by the surrounding electric field, and it’s this motion that produces an electrical current.

STEP 2) ELECTRICAL ENERGY IS CONVERTED

The direct current (DC) created by step one is then converted into alternating current (AC) by your inverter. The majority of homes and buildings run on AC electricity.

STEP 3) AC GOES STRAIGHT TO THE HOME

The converted electricity is then used by your home. So, when your solar system is producing electricity, your home uses this generated electricity at no cost, rather than the grid electricity that you are charged for by your energy company.

STEP 4) EXCESS ELECTRICITY IS SOLD TO THE GRID

When panels produce more sunlight than your home is using, your meter will identify this and send the surplus electricity back to the grid. Practically all energy companies will give you credits on your power bill for the electricity you send back to the grid and that credit is applied to your power bill, bringing down the cost.
